When Your Child Turns 3: Transition to Pre-School
If your child is younger than 3 years old, the Early Support for Infant and Toddlers program can offer transition support.
When your child turns 3 years old, you can find support through preschool special education services. If you have been in ESIT, your family resources coordinator will help you find out if your child qualifies. If you are just getting started, you can reach out to your local school district and ask about special education services.

Learn more about Eligible Conditions Specific to Age and Type of Evidence.
- If your child is enrolled in ESIT, DDCS will send you notice at least six months before your child’s 4th birthday. The notice will explain steps to re-apply if eligibility expires.
- If your child is not enrolled in ESIT, you can reach out to our specialists at any time for help with the DDCS Intake and Eligibility process.
School Records and Our Eligibility Process
- Special education evaluations and other school records can help determine if your child meets DDCS eligibility requirements.
- If you would like your school district to share a copy of your child’s records with us, you will need to sign a consent form. If you are receiving ESIT services, you can ask about and sign a consent form for DDCS at your child’s preschool transition planning meeting. You can also find a consent form on our website.
- With your consent, our Intake and Eligibility staff can help you gather information from schools, medical providers and others. They can help with re-applications and with new applications.
